The Battle of Little Bighorn: Custer's Last Stand | Part 7
“You and I are going home today, and by a trail that is strange to us both…”
The Battle of The Little Bighorn is one of the totemic moments of American frontier history. However, it is also mysterious, with the exact events of that blood-soaked day difficult to trace. On the 22nd of June, George Custer marched out with vague orders to drive the vast gathering of the Lakota and their allies, under the leadership of Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull, towards General Terry’s force, advancing from the South. Custer, keen as ever for a charge, was hoping to score a considerable defeat over the Native Americans in time for the 4th of July centenary. Then, on the evening of the 24th of June, Crow scou...

The History of Dragons Explained

"When dragons flew to war… everything burned. I do not wish to rule over a kingdom of ash and bone." Dragons - the most compelling of mythical beasts - are one of the most vivid creations of all human imagination, and their enduring resonance is captivatingly displayed by their role in George R.R. Martin’s House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones. But how did the legend of the dragon, prominent ...

58:21 Hey gentlemen, "squaw" is an ethnic and sexual slur. I acknowledge that, as non-indigenous person growing up in the 1970s it was used without intending insult, but we learn and grow. I will say, again as an American growing up in the 1970s, G.A.Custer was only ever presented to me as an arrogant buffon who attacked women and children. It sounds like he was remembered very differently in the U.K. during that time.

I want to express my sincere thanks to the guys and of course to the great guest, Sarah Churchwell, for enhancing my awareness of the despicableness Hollywood and of the people who like this profoundly racist book/movie. I am certain that many people are going to be enraged about this podcast and complain about how wrong the guest is or how disappointed they are with the guys for not countering her points, but that's only because they are racist themselves or because they are too attached to the story and hence can't face up to the unpleasant fact that it's a white supremacist fantasy that whitewashes the evils of slavery.

When you get past all the romantic pretentious White American rhetoric, it was an arrogant, glory seeking idiot, leading his men to certain death. The nearest comparison to the Little Bighorn was the Battle of Rorkes Drift in the Zulu Wars. The only difference being, that real soldiers who knew what they were doing fought, lived and won that battle. The USA has so little history up to WW2, it has had to glorify military exploits that were little more than skirmishes , in comparison to the former world powers.

In elementary school we did presentations as a historical figure. My native mother made me dress as Custer and present a speech essentially saying "I thought I could defeat the native people, but how wrong I was" and I then pulled back a fake hair prop to look like I had been scalped. Looking back this was not appropriate, but very entertaining.

I've become utterly obsessed with your podcast, and unlike many of my previous obsessions I regard it as nothing but a good thing. I've learned SO much, I had great interest in history, but to know the greater nuances and wider context about subjects that otherwise I'd have overlooked (Custer and Sitting Bull are two exceptional examples) is like fibre for the soul! I can lose hours but gain decades worth of knowledge, it frankly should be part of the curriculum. I didn't think I could like you guys anymore than I did already, but if I'm not mistaken Dominic, it looks as though there's quite the collection of classic Who DVD's on your shelf. Good show!

I'm going to guess that if dragon mythology emerged several different geographical locations at roughly the same time, that in actuality the myth goes far back in human history. And that all these cultures already had these myths and verbal form. We just think the myth emerged at that time when in reality it was just when it was first written down.

it's not complicated in and of itself its just complicated by the pressure to believe what we're supposed to believe. dragons are just dinosaurs! we know this because it's been scientifically proven eg Mary Schweitzers discovery of red blood cells in t-rex bones when we know they can only survive thousands of years under *lab conditions!* The reference to behemoth in Job clearly details a large sauropod. We have good evidence for dinosaur and human coexistence *but no evidence (other than 'absence of evidence' ie not found in same rock layers) for them not co-existing.*

Apparently true story about Black American GIs in Northern Ireland. There was an advert for a 'Blacks' meeting - meaning the Protestant order of the Royal Black Preceptory. The Sir Nights of the Preceptory were stunned when at their Hall turned up many black American GIs. However after the initial suspicion they all got on famously and the black GIs used the Hall until they were posted elsewhere.
